About this Recipe



Activate Yeast

  • 1 (.25 ounce) package of active dry yeast
  • ¼ cup of warm water (100 to 110 degrees)
  • 1 tablespoon of Sugar


  • 4 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 4 tablespoons of butter
  • 2 teaspoons of course seasalt

You will Need

  • Grill sheet

  • ¾ cups of warm water
  • ¼ cup of Sugar
  • 3 tablespoons of milk
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2 teaspoons of course seasalt
  • ½ teaspoon of baking soda
  • 3 ½ cups of bread flour
  • 1 ½  tablespoons of Minced Garlic


Step 1

In a large bowl, dissolve yeast and 1 teaspoon of sugar in ¼ cup of warm water (100 to 110 degrees – if it’s too hot it will kill the yeast).

Step 2

Let stand about 10-20 minutes, until frothy.

Step 3

Stir in sugar, milk, egg, salt, and baking soda into the bowl with the activated yeast.

Step 4

Sift 3 cups of flour into the bowl or enough to make a soft dough.

Step 5

Knead for 6 to 8 minutes on a lightly floured surface, or until smooth.

Step 6

Place dough in a well oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and set aside to rise (I put my bowl in my oven – turned off). Let it rise 1to 1.5 hours, until the dough has doubled in volume.

Step 7

Punch down dough, and knead in garlic.

Step 8

  1. Pinch off small handfuls of dough about the size of a golf ball. Roll into balls, and place on a tray. Cover with a towel, and allow it to rise until doubled in size, about 30 to 60 minutes (I put it back in the oven again).

Step 9

During the second rising, preheat the grill to high heat.

Step 10

At grill side, roll one ball of dough out into a thin circle. Lightly oil grill sheet with the oil/butter/salt mixture.

Step 11

Place dough on grill, and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, or until puffy and lightly browned. Brush the uncooked side with butter mixture, and turn over.

Step 12

Brush the cooked side with butter, and cook until browned, another 2 to 4 minutes.

Step 13

Remove from grill, and continue the process until all the naan has been prepared.
